COERR Mae Hong Son Held Agriculture and Environment Training for Refugees Prepared for Third Country Resettlement

COERR Mae Hong Son organized a training in Organic Agriculture for refugees who are prepared for resettlement in the third country. The training was held on September 18-19, 2013 for 15 refugees in Ban Mae Surin Camp of Khun Yuam District and on September 26-27, 2013 for 20 refugees in Ban Mai Nai Soi Camp of Muang District, Mae Hong Son Province. The contents of the training are 1) how to sow seeds in tray and transplanting 2) how to grow plants in green houses 3) Watching VDO about how to do cultivation using machine, how to raise livestock, do fishery and to do mining The training is useful for these refugee farmers who are going to the third countries for preparation for a new methodology of agriculture in which labour is only needed to fill the gap where and when machine are not practical.

A training in small plot kitchen gardening was held in Ban Mae Surin Camp during September 4 – 5, 2013 for 81 refugees: 54 female and 27 male to learn how to prepare proper soil-mixture for growing vegetables in any containers available, in order to produce food for household.

On September 27-28, 2013, COERR also held the Training on Youth and Disaster Risk Reduction for 20 young refugees who are preparing for resettlement in the third country, in order to raise awareness about disaster management including types of hazards, such as floods, landslide, forest fire, etc.; risk assessment, and risk reduction including practice of drawing community map which will help them to observe hazard-prone areas and safe areas in their community and learn how to protect themselves, family and community members in time of needs in order to avoid or reduce damages and loss. Knowledge from the training will enable youth to acquire leadership skills and play important roles in their society wherever they are, as well.
